49ers vs. Giants: Missed field goals cap first half with New York up 10-3

The San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants each had chances to put points on the board late in the first half, but neither converted so the Giants head into the half with a 10-3 lead after a strong second quarter.

The 49ers led 3-0 after the first quarter, but the Giants grabbed the lad back on a six-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz. On their next drive, the Giants drove down the field again and this time capped it with a 34-yard Lawrence Tynes to extend their lead to 10-3.

It looked like New York would add to that lead on their final drive of the half, but Tynes had a field goal blocked. That should have ended the half, but a 36-yard pass put San Francisco in field goal range and set up a last second attempt by David Akers. Unfortunately for the Niners, he missed his second field goal of the day.

Both the Giants and 49ers have had their struggles and successes on both sides of the ball. At the half, they are pretty even with New York racking up 199 yards of offense and the 49ers 173 yards.

49ers vs. Giants: David Akers field goal gives San Francisco 3-0 lead

The San Francisco 49ers came out firing in Sunday's much anticipated clash with the New York Giants, but despite their early dominance they only have a 3-0 lead to show for it after the first quarter.

The 49ers returned to start the game and went 50 yards on 12 plays to set up David Akers for a 43-yard field goal. That drive went for naught, though, because Akers' field goal attempted missed wide.

After a quick three-and-out, San Francisco got the ball back and put together another solid drive. Once again they had 12 plays on the drive, this time setting Akers up for a 42-yard field goal attempt, which he nailed to give the 49ers a 3-0 lead.

Alex Smith has been solid in the first quarter, completing eight of 13 passes for 68 yards. The 49ers have done their real damage on the ground, picking up 52 yards on just nine carries. Still, they will not be happy that despite completely dominating the Giants they lead by just three points.
