California vs. Arizona State final: Bears lose 27-17

The Arizona State Sun Devils took care of the California Golden Bears on Saturday, winning 27-17 on a sunny Berkeley afternoon.

The Sun Devils moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 Conference with the win. After building a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter, Arizona State saw Cal bring the game within 3. Cal quarterback Zach Maynard hit Keenan Allen on a 10-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left to play.

But the Sun Devils answered back with a quick scoring drive just three minutes later, as Taylor Kelly found Kevin Ozier for a 22-yard touchdown pass and a 27-17 lead.

The Bears committed a whopping 12 penalties for 119 yards, while Maynard completed just 9-28 passes in the loss that dropped them to 1-4.

Box Score Hero: QB Taylor Kelly, Arizona State. Kelly threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns while avoiding any interceptions.

Rankings Ramifications: Arizona State was receiving some votes last week, so the win will likely have them creep closer to the top 25.

But Did They Cover? The Sun Devils were favored by 2.5 points and did cover.

Next Week's Schedule: Arizona State will take a week off, while Cal prepares to host UCLA.

Cal vs. ASU: Golden Bears trail by 10 after 3 quarters

The Cal Golden Bears continue to trail the ASU Sun Devils after three quarters, 20-10. Cal's offense struggled almost the entire first half and proved unable to use the half to reset and turn things around. They did manage a field goal in the closing minutes of the third quarter, but it remains to be seen if they can generate any momentum in the fourth.

Zach Maynard is just 7-for-18 through three quarters, collecting only 102 yards. Isi Sofele is having a better day, picking up 105 yards on 15 carries with Cal's only touchdown, but he also has Cal's only fumble. Keenan Allen is the leading Golden Bears receiver, with three catches for 69 yards.

As they have the entire game, the Golden Bears' defense is doing their best to keep Cal in contention. They've twice stiffened up to force ASU to settle for field goals, one of which was missed. If Cal can't find a way to keep things going on offense, though, they may quickly find themselves 1-4.

Cal vs. ASU halftime: Golden Bears offense struggling as ASU leads, 17-7

The Cal State Golden Bears trail the ASU Sun Devils at halftime, 17-7. Cal's offense has struggled in the face of pressure from ASU's defensive line, both failing to move the ball and Isi Sofele coughing up a fumble late in the half.

Cal managed less than 150 yards of offense in the half, with Zach Maynard going 3-for-8 while throwing for 63 yards, and Sofele adding 89 yards on 12 carries. The Golden Bears' only score came on a three-play, 76-yard drive for a touchdown that featured a 44-yard pass to Keenan Allen and a 24-yard touchdown rush by Sofele. The seven drives other than that one have resulted in five punts, a fumble and the end of the half.

Cal is also having a problem with penalties, collecting seven flags for 68 yards. ASU has been called for only one penalty for five yards.

The Golden Bears' defense is doing its best to keep Cal in the game. Midway through the second quarter they stopped ASU in the red zone to force a field goal, but after Sofele's fumble the defense was unable to stop ASU from putting up another touchdown.

The game isn't yet out of hand for Cal, but they'll need to regroup at the half and eliminate the preventable mistakes in the second half.

Cal vs. ASU score: Cal trails after 1 quarter, 7-0

The California Golden Bears trail the ASU Sun Devils, 7-0, after one quarter of action. The Cal offense has struggled to get started, with quarterback Zach Maynard going just 1-for-3 for 11 yards in the quarter.

Running back Isi Sofele has pitched in to carry the offense, but he's only mustered 48 yards on eight carries. Cal had three drives in the first quarter, only one of which went more than 10 yards and all three of which resulted in a punt.

Cal's defense is doing better, forcing a punt on two out of Arizona State's firs three drives. The third drive, however, went 67 yards on nine plays for a touchdown. Cal entered the game against the Sun Devils as very slight underdogs,. If they can keep things close they have a very good shot at the win, but that will mean getting the offense started in the second quarter.

Cal vs. ASU: Golden Bears address resilience, rotations, injuries

Here are some updates from Tuesday's press conference for the California Golden Bears as they prepare to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils this week. Jeff Faraudo of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Jeff Tedford is still looking on working Brendan Bigelow into the rotation. Although Bigelow has proven he can be very productive when he has gotten carries, so far he's only touched the football several times per game. Tedford says Bigelow is still a work in progress despite his spectacular play.

The status of Cal offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin is still uncertain. Summers-Gavin has been out the past three games with a leg injury and his status is still day-to-day. Tedford really didn't address the situation all that well.

Cal players encourage the fans not to give up on the team for only going 1-3. The Bears have played two of the hardest games on their schedule and now have a winnable slate going forward, so there's definite reason for some optimism despite the slow start.

Cal vs. Arizona State: Odds, bettings lines, and spread

The Cal Golden Bears are 2-point favorites at home as they welcome the Arizona State Sun Devils into Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday. The Golden Bears will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak, but ASU provides a tough test.

The money line currently sits at -110 with the over/under at 54 1/2.

The Sun Devils are 3-1 on the season after blowing out the Utah Utes in their Pac-12 opener last weekend. ASU's only loss came at Missouri, and that came down to the final minutes. They've looked vastly improved under new head coach, Todd Graham, and could make a run for the Pac-12 South title.

Cal is far better than its 1-3 record indicates. After a tough loss to Nevada to start the season, it rolled over FCS Southern Utah before coming very close to upsetting the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road. It needs to win five of eight to qualify for a bowl game, and securing victories in its home games will be key.
