Since women's water polo became an event for the Olympics in 2000, the United States has always come up a little short. They've won two silver medals -- including a disappointing Silver back in 2008 in Beijing -- and one bronze. The team finally broke through on Thursday, defeating Spain to claim that elusive gold medal.
Led by 19-year-old phenom Maggie Steffens, who scored five goals and dished out an assists against a talent group of Spaniards, the U.S. won by a score of 8-5. Steffens scored four-straight goals at one point, just about guaranteeing a victory for Team USA.
Steffens is from Danville, California, which is about 30 miles east of Oakland. I'd say she did more than make the Bay Area proud today.
