U.S. Olympic Medal Count 2012: America Remains On Top Heading Into Sunday

The second weekend of the 2012 Olympic Games is heating up, with track and field finally underway in earnest and the pool swimming events at an end. The United States are leading in both total medal count and gold medals, edging China by just one in both categories.

Great Britain has moved into third place with a strong showing in track and field on Saturday. They'll try to keep impressing and giving their countrymen a reason to cheer as the track and field events continue over the next few days.

Here are the total medal leaders at the end of Saturday's events:

1. United States - 54 (26, 13, 15)
2. China - 53 (25, 16, 12)
3. Great Britain - 29 (14, 7, 8)
4. Russia - 28 (3, 15, 10)
5. Japan - 24 (2, 10, 12)
