Pitcher Tim Lincecum returned to his inconsistent ways and the San Francisco Giants' offense couldn't solve the Atlanta Braves in a 7-1 loss Sunday night before a national TV audience.
Lincecum took the loss to fall to 7-14 and lasted just five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and threw 90 pitches despite the brevity of the outing. Meanwhile, former Oakland Athletics pitcher Tim Hudson kept the Giants' offense in check, surrendering one run on five hits in seven innings to improve to 13-4 on the season.
The Giants (71-57) missed a chance to build on their lead in the NL West after both Los Angeles and Arizona lost earlier in the day.
Buster Posey and Hunter Pence combined for five of the Giants' six hits. San Francisco won the first two games of the series at AT&T Park, but ended up with a home split after losing the final two. Brandon Crawford drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.
The Giants head to Houston, where they will begin a six-game road trip that includes three game against the Chicago Cubs.

Even though the San Francisco Giants had their six-game win streak snapped on Saturday by the Atlanta Braves, they'll look to close out the series with a victory as Tim Lincecum takes the mound.
Lincecum (7-13, 5.30 ERA) has been far from stellar, but he's been much more steady as of late. He won his third consecutive road start Tuesday after 5.2 innings of work en route to a 4-1 victory over the Dodgers, but has lost both of his starts at home this month to go along with a 5.73 ERA. He's also lost three of his last four outings against Atlanta.
Atlanta will send out Tim Hudson (12-4, 3.69 ERA), who is hoping to get back to his winning ways. He gave up four runs in the first inning of Monday's 5-4, 13-inning loss to the Nationals, though Atlanta had won the previous eight games in which Hudson started.
First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

Jason Heyward hit a three-run home run, leading an 11-hit attack as the Atlanta Braves topped the San Francisco Giants 7-3 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Giants, who saw their lead in the National League West shrink to two games.
Madison Bumgarner (14-8) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. After striking out 10 and walking none in his previous start on Monday night at Dodger Stadium, Bumgarner struck out five and walked four on Saturday afternoon.
The Giants had just five hits on the day, one of them a pinch-hit, two-run double by Gregor Blanco in the seventh inning that cut Atlanta's lead to 4-3. But the Braves fought back with a pair of eighth-inning runs to help put the game away.
Mike Minor (7-10) pitched into the seventh inning for the win, walking none while striking out five. He allowed three runs.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on ESPN Sunday night baseball, with Tim Lincecum on the mound for the Giants, facing Tim Hudson for the Braves.

The San Francisco Giants have found themselves a winning formula despite the loss of Melky Cabrera, looking for their sixth consecutive victory on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves at AT&T Park.
Madison Bumgarner (14-7, 2.83 ERA) will be on the bump, which usually means good things for the Black and Orange. The left-hander's was on fire in his last start, allowing just four hits while fanning 10 in eight scoreless innings of a 2-1 win over the rival Dodgers on Monday in L.A. He is 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA over his last eight starts.
The Braves will counter with Mike Minor (6-10, 4.74), who is hoping to evade his fourth straight loss. He allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his last start, but to no avail as they fell 5-0 loss to the Dodgers last Sunday. Minor has a 0.75 ERA in two starts against the Giants.
First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Angel Pagan registered four hits and finished a home run shy of the cycle, as the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, in the second test of a four-game set Friday at AT&T Park.
Pagan scored twice and also knocked in a run, while Marco Scutaro, Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey added an RBI apiece for the Giants, who won their fifth straight contest.
Ryan Vogelsong (11-7) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 frames to snap a two-game slide.
"He's definitely been our spark plug," Vogelsong said of Pagan. "It's been fun to watch."
Javier Lopez recorded the final out of the eighth and then fired a perfect ninth to nail down his fourth save of the season.
Ben Sheets (4-4) gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings to absorb the loss.
"I hate the way I pitched," Sheets lamented. "I feel like I made some good pitches, just didn't put anybody away."
Freddie Freeman hit two homers and Jason Heyward also went deep, but the Braves lost for the sixth time in their last seven games.
Heyward clubbed a two-out homer in the first to give Atlanta an early lead and Freeman pressed the advantage to 2-0 in the second when he crushed a leadoff blast to center field.
The Giants, who wasted a bases-loaded chance in the second when Vogelsong grounded into a double play, countered in the third as Pagan doubled to start the frame, moved to third on a bunt and scored easily on Sandoval's two-bagger to left field.
Posey's fly out pushed Sandoval to third and, after Hunter Pence walked, Sheets uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Sandoval to score and tie the game.
San Francisco plated two more in the fourth to grab the lead for good. Gregor Blanco singled to start the inning and moved to second two batters later on Vogelsong's bunt.
Pagan then scorched a triple into right field to plate Blanco and Scutaro followed with a single to score Pagan for a 4-2 lead.
The Giants couldn't capitalize again with the bases full in the fifth, but tacked on a run in the sixth. Pagan smacked a leadoff single, but was wiped away on Scutaro's fielder's choice.
Scutaro moved to second on Sandoval's fly out to center field before scoring on Posey's line-drive double that tipped off Chipper Jones' glove at third and rolled into left field to extend the lead to 5-2.
Freeman then launched his second homer of the night into right field in the seventh, chasing Vogelsong from the contest.
Jose Mijares entered and served up a single to Brian McCann before Santiago Casilla took over on the mound and retired the next two Braves to maintain the Giants' two-run advantage.
Sergio Romo and Lopez combined to blank the Braves in the eighth before Lopez retired the side in order in the ninth.
Game Notes
It was the third multi-homer game of Freeman's career and his second this season ... Pagan also had a four-hit game on Aug. 3 against the Colorado Rockies ... Posey had missed the last two games with a tight right hamstring ... The Giants went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base.

The San Francisco Giants will have their All-Star catcher back in the lineup for Friday night's game with the Atlanta Braves. Buster Posey, who missed last night's game with a hamstring issue, is not completely back to strength but feels good enough to give it a go.
Here is the latest from AT&T Park:

Amidst all the trade rumors and dealings that are going around baseball today, manager Bruce Bochy is still yet to release his lineup. Expect to see Posey batting in his customary No. 4 spot unless something else goes down. Ryan Vogelsong will make the start for the Giants. Ben Sheets starts for Atlanta.
As for the Braves, here is their lineup tonight:
Michael Bourn - CF
Martin Prado - SS
Jason Heyward - RF
Chipper Jones - 3B
Freddie Freeman - 1B
Brian McCann - C
Dan Uggla - 2B
Eric Hinske - LF
Ben Sheets - P

The San Francisco Giants are putting together a nice winning streak, and hope to keep it going behind Ryan Vogelsong on Friday against the Atlanta Braves.
Vogelsong (10-7, 2.85 ERA) has lost his last two starts in ugly fashion, allowing 11 runs in just 5.2 innings pitched, including against San Diego Sunday when he threw 35 pitches in a three-run first before getting yanked with no outs in the fourth.
Ben Sheets (4-3, 3.07) also looks to avoid his third consecutive loss after allowing 11 runs and five homers in 12 innings in his last two starts. Sheets gave up four hits Saturday against the Dodgers, but they all left the park in a 6-4 defeat.
Buster Posey could likely return today, but it's been Angel Pagan doing a lot of the brunt work, batting .467 with 10 runs during his latest seven-game hitting streak.
First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Barry Zito pitched into the ninth inning on Thursday and the San Francisco Giants used a four-run fifth to down the Atlanta Braves, 5-2, in the opener of a four-game series between the playoff hopefuls.
Zito (10-8) allowed five hits, walked three, struck out five and left after allowing a pair of singles to begin the ninth. The 34-year-old lefty improved to 5-1 lifetime against Atlanta.
Hector Sanchez went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run double for the Giants, who were coming off a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They now lead their NL West rivals by three games.
Tommy Hanson (12-6) took the loss in his second start since returning from the 15-day disabled list. He was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.
Zito was charged with two runs after Freddie Freeman plated Martin Prado and Chipper Jones with a double off of reliever Jeremy Affeldt.
Dan Uggla followed with a walk before Javier Lopez struck out Brian McCann. Sergio Romo then ended the threat and secured his sixth save of the season by inducing a pair of groundouts.
"When you do it by committee that's the way it goes," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We have four really good guys we're comfortable with to go out there to finish off a game."
The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the third when Angel Pagan walked, stole second and slid into home with two down on Pablo Sandoval's sinking liner to left.
Pagan scored again in the fifth when he worked a leadoff walk, moved up on Marco Scutaro's base hit and crossed the plate when Hunter Pence placed a bunt single past Hanson to the right side of the infield.
Scutaro came home when Freeman couldn't handle Brandon Belt's grounder toward first base and Sanchez followed with a double down the right-field line to cap the frame.
"What a job he's done since he's assumed the leadoff spot," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Pagan. "He's really picked up his game since he's gone to the leadoff spot. He's playing as good ball as anybody."
The Braves, one of the two NL wild card leaders, have lost five of their last six games.
"The good thing is we came back and they used (three) guys there in the ninth inning so we got into their bullpen a little bit," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
Game Notes
The Giants have won each of Zito's last four appearances ... Zito held the Braves scoreless over seven innings in a July 17 victory ... Hanson suffered his first loss since July 2 ... Atlanta went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Here is San Francisco's lineup for Thursday night's game. First pitch from AT&T Park is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
Angel Pagan-CF
Marco Scutaro-2B
Pablo Sandoval-3B

Christian placed on 15-day disabled list:

As the Atlanta Braves go for their fifth consecutive victory at AT&T Park, the San Francisco Giants look to keep them in check while extending their first place lead in the NL West.
After sweeping the Dodgers in their last set, the Black and Orange turn to Barry Zito (9-8, 4.42 ERA), who is 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA in six career starts versus the Braves. The former Cy Young winner allowed just three hits in seven innings of work during the Giants' 9-0 win at Turner Field on July 17. This will be his first appearance against the Braves at AT&T Park.
Atlanta will send out Tommy Hanson (12-5, 4.27), who has been solid since returning form the DL. He allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Dodgers on Friday. He is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in four career starts against the Giants, including one in the 2010 playoffs.
It remains uncertain if Buster Posey will return to the lineup on Thursday after he was a late scratch on Wednesday with some hamstring tightness. He is 7-for-12 with three doubles and six RBIs against Atlanta so far in 2012.
First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. PT this evening with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.
