California native Tyler Clary was looking for glory in the 200M backstroke final on Thursday at the 2012 Olympic games in London, trying to keep fellow American Ryan Lochte taking home the gold. And thanks to a spectacular performace Clary did just that, claiming the gold medal as Lochte would have to settle for the bronze.
Clary was on fire in the water, beating out the field with a time of 1:53:41. Japan's Ryosuke Irie would end up with the silver medal after a time of 1:53:78. Lochte's bronze-medal time was 1:53:94.
Lochte won this event during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with the same exact time he swam today.
The United States is sitting pretty in the medal count on the sixth day of Olympic competition, earning a number of medals already today. You can check out SI's complete medal tracker here.
