Stay connected for news and updates

The United States have been dominate in many Olympic disciplines over the years, though had never won a gold in any jodo event in the history of the Olympic games. But American Kayla Harrison changed all of that on Thursday, earning the United States its first judo gold medal in Olympic history, taking home the 78-kilogram title at the 2012 London Games.

Harrison topped Great Britain's Gemma Gibbons in a final bout, getting the upper hand early while throwing Gibbons twice.

Harrison's medal is the U.S.' second in judo this week after teammate Marti Malloy of San Jose, CA won a bronze in the women's 57-kilogram division.

Audrey Tcheumeo of France and Mayra Aguiar of Brazil each took home a bronze medal.
