Team USA Medal Count: Alex Morgan, Nathan Adrian Headline Bay Area Olympic Winners

There were so many Olympians from the Bay Area at the 2012 London Olympic games that it's hard to keep track of all of them. Perhaps the headliner is Cal's Alex Morgan, who had perhaps the biggest moment for Team USA in scoring the game-winning goal in extra time to beat Canada in the semifinal. The USWNT ended up beating Japan for the gold medal, and Morgan (along with Stanford teammates like Nicole Barnhart, Rachel Buehler and Kelley O'Hara) won individual gold. Morgan's teammate Megan Rapinoe is originally from Redding.

The Bay Area also had dominance in the pool. Seven women's water polo players won gold for the United States, with five coming from Stanford--including breakout star Maggie Steffans--and two from Cal. The Bears dominated the pool, with Nathan Adrian winning the men's 100 meter freestyle and two more medals (one gold in the 4 x 100 meter medley, one silver in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle), and Dana Vollmer earning three Olympic golds.

Stanford's Kerri Walsh-Jennings won her third straight gold medal in women's beach volleyball along with her partner Misty May-Treanor, culminating the greatest dynasty in women's beach volleyball.

Here are some of the other big winners from the Bay Area.

  • Natalie Coughlin (from Vallejo, went to school at Cal) captured her 12th medal in the women's 400 free relay.
  • Santa Clara's Haley Anderson won silver in the women's 10k Open Water.
  • Bay Area locals Erin Cafaro and Mary Whippie won gold in the women's rowing eights.
  • Stanford's Kristian Ipsen earned a bronze in the three meter synchronized springboard.
  • Scott Gault won a bronze in the men's coxless four.
  • Jeneba Tarmoh (from San Jose) won a gold as part of the relay pool in the women's 4 x 100 meter relay.
  • Keshia Baker (from Fairfield) won a gold medal for the United States for running a prelim in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
