It was an exciting and medal-filled day 5 at the 2012 London Olympic games, with a number of American olympians taking home medals and dominating their respective events along the way.
Cal's Nathan Adrian captured gold in the men's 100M freestyle by just .01 seconds over Australia's James Magnussen.The 23-year-old finished in 47.52 seconds, becoming the first American man to win the 100 free since Matt Biondi in 1988.
Gymnast Danell Leyva rallied back to earn himself the bronze in the men's gymnastics all-around.The 20-year-old Florida native had a miscue on his dismount on the pommel horse, but used superb showings on the parallel bars and high bar to get himself on the podium. Teammate John Orozco's all-around medal dreams were shattered when he fell off the pommel horse. He finished eighth.
Cal alumni and budding Olympic star Allison Schmitt led the United States to a gold medal in the 4x200M freestyle Along with the rest of the American team, Alyssa Anderson, of Granite Bay, CA and Missy Franklin, set a new Olympic-record by finishing in 7 minutes, 42.92 seconds.
The No. 1 seeded Women's indoor volleyball extended their undefeated streak after taking out the No. 3 seeded Chinese with a 26-24, 25-16, 31-29 victory at Earls Court. to improve to 3-0 in the tournament. Foluke Akinradewo, the 4-time All-American out of Stanford, had a nice game with eight kills and two blocks, while Destinee Hooker had 17 kills during the match.
Bay Area native Kara Kohler and her US women's rowing team earned themselves a bronze medal in the women's quadruple sculls at Dorney Lake outside of London. The Ukraine won its first-ever gold medal in rowing in the event.
