Dana Vollmer has her second gold medal. She won her first individual gold in world record time. Now she was part of the 800 meter freestyle relay team that beat out Australia to win gold.
Missy Franklin led off for the United States and put the USA in a good position early, but faded down the stretch and fell into third place going into Vollmer's leg. Vollmer performed very well to put the United States back in front for a long part of their relay, but Australia just overtook them at the end to finish second after Vollmer's leg. Shannon Vreeland was the third leg of that race and kept the USA just behind Australia going into the final leg of the race. However, the fourth leg of the race belonged to Allison Schmitt, the 200 meter freestyle gold medalist, and she scorched Alicia Coutts of Australia.
This concludes Vollmer's Olympics, as she leaves with two gold medals in two events. Cal now has totalled seven swimming medals from their athletes in six events, with three of them being Olympic gold.
