2012 Olympics, Women's Quadruple Sculls Final: USA Takes Bronze, Ukraine Wins First Ever Gold Medal In Rowing

Bay Area native Kara Kohler and her US women's rowing team were looking for a gold medal on Wednesday in the final of the women's quadruple sculls at the 2012 London Olympic games, but unfortunately would have to settle for a bronze as the Ukraine won its first-ever gold medal in rowing at Dorney Lake outside of London.

The Ukrainian crew of Kateryna Tarasenko, Nataliya Dovgodko, Anastasia Kozhenkova and Yana Dementieva crossed the finish line in 6 minutes, 35.93 seconds, edging the silver-medalist German team by 2.16 seconds. The United States team earned their bronze in a time of 6:40.63.

The US team was neck and neck with the Germans until the last 500 meters when they started to tail off. Germany failed to win gold in the event for only the second time since the quadruple sculls were added to the Olympics back in 1988.

With the win Ukraine won it's second gold medal of the London Games, taking the country's overall medal haul to four. It was only their third rowing medal in their history.
