Donaire Vs. Mathebula Results: Nonito Donaire Wins Decision Victory To Unify Belts

On Saturday night,San Mateo resident Nonito Donaire put his WBO super bantamweight title on the line against Jeffrey Mathebula, who entered the fight as the IBF super bantamweight champion. Donaire -- who is considered a Top 5 pound-for-pound boxer -- was able to retain his belt and unify the two titles to improve to 29-1, thanks to a unanimous decision from the judges.

Donaire scored a knockdown in the fourth round and broke Mathebula's tooth with a huge right hand in the 11th inning, when the fight was already well in hand for the local boy. Donaire ended up winning the HBO-televised event on scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 117-110.

Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook had this to add:

For the record, Donaire's post-fight interview with Max Kellerman seemed to lean toward the fight many of us saw on TV, a competitive, challenging bout for Nonito, rather than the one-way traffic some believed it to be. But however you slice it, Donaire won and beat a top ten guy tonight, and deserved the victory.

Donaire remains a four-division champion and will likely soon be preparing for his next opponent -- whoever that may be.
