London Olympics 2012: Alexandr Vinokurov Takes Gold, BMC's Taylor Phinney Just Misses Bronze

The 2012 Men's Road Race cycling event is in the books, and it was a heartbreaker for Taylor Phinney, a member of Santa Rosa-based BMC Racing Team. Phinney finished fourth, just missing the podium. Alexandr Vinokurov of Kazakhstan takes home the Gold Medal, Rigoberto Uran of Columba took Silver, and Alexander Kristoff of Norway earns the Bronze.

The finish of the race saw a pack of leaders make it to the final kilometers ahead of the main peloton, but Vinokurov ruined the chance of a bunch sprint when he jumped out in front with less than 1km to go. Uran was able to go with him, and Vinokurov separated from Uran when the Columbian glanced over his shoulder. That left the remaining leaders to fight it out for Bronze, and Phinney was unable to come out ahead in that sprint. Thankfully for him it was not his only shot at Olympic Glory. He competes in the Men's Individual Time Trial event on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
