Friday night brought with it the opening ceremony to the 2012 Olympics in London. The production was directed by Danny Boyle and was extremely odd, as all good Olympics opening ceremonies tend to be.

The celebration began with a long look at England's pastoral and industrial era, represented through costuming, music, dance and extremely elaborate set pieces. The celebration then shifted to truly fantastical as the Queen and James Bond appeared to skydive out of a helicopter.

Following that, some hospital children celebrated going to bed and then were tortured by nightmarish visions of literary villains, including a massive inflatable representation of Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter novels. Luckily, a swarm of Marry Poppins impersonators arrived to ward off the baddies and restore order.

There was then a medley of classic and contemporary British love songs that told the story of two modern characters falling in love.
