MLB Draft 2012: Stanford's RHP Mark Appel Will Be Top Pick, According To Reports

Stay connected for news and updates

According to a tweet from CBS' Jon Heyman, the early word on the MLB Draft is that the Houston Astros will take Stanford RHP Mark Appel with the no. 1 overall pick and the Minnesota Twins will take Georgia prep star CF Byron Buxton with the second pick. This is just talk at the moment but it seems to be gaining steam as a consensus.

Buxton is listed as the no. 1 overall prospect in the draft by ESPN's Keith Law while Appel is ranked no. 4. Both Law and MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo have Appel and Buxton going 1-2 at the top of the draft. Mayo also has the Kansas City Royals taking University of San Francisco RHP Kyle Zimmer with the no. 5 overall pick.

Appel has improved every season with the Cardinal, culminating in a 2.27 ERA with 127 strikeouts and a 10-1 record as a junior.
