2012 Kentucky Derby Winner: I'll Have Another Wins At Churchill Downs

More: Derby payouts are here.

After much anticipation and a day full of pageantry and hullabaloo, the 2012 Kentucky Derby was run on Saturday, culminated in the 138th winner at Churchill Downs. I'll Have Another took home the top prize with a thrilling last-second win. Bodemeister came in second. Dullahan took third place. I'll Have Another had 14-1 odds against at race time.

The morning line favorite on Saturday was Bodemeister, but Union Rags seemed to capture the imagination, or at least the attention, of most bettors and became the favorite to win as the day progressed.

The Run for the Roses now complete, speculation can turn to the other two legs of the Triple Crown. I'll Have Another will now attempt to win one of the most elusive championships in sports. I'll Have Another will go for wins in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in an attempt to become the first horse to take all three wins since Affirmed took the Triple Crown back in 1978.

Bodemeister, who drew the six hole, may have some trouble with a lack of room on the inside that could hurt the favorite's chances. Kentucky Derby 2012 Betting Guide: How To Bet On The Horses

If you're like me, you're a sports fan. You appreciate the spectacle and tradition of a wide range of sports and will watch pretty much anything with a little drama and intrigue. Also, if you're like me, you watch horse racing about three times a year, total (the Triple Crown races, yes). I'm not the type that goes to the track on a regular basis (read: one time in my life, when I was about eight, and my uncle placed a bet for me, in which I won seven dollars), and that's probably true for a lot of people. Still, if you're watching the horses this Saturday, one way to take part in the tradition of the American Institution known as the Kentucky Derby, make a little more interesting, and maybe get a little something out of it, is to make yourself a mint julep and put a few of your hard earned dollars on your favorite horse or jockey.

I'm not the most trustworthy source on advice for this, as you might have gathered, but SB Nation's resident Horse Whisperer, Matt Gardner, is. You can check out his full column on how to bet on the Kentucky Derby here, but first things first, I'll let Matt lay out a little jargon you may need to know.

WIN: A bet on a horse to win (if you don't know this you probably shouldn't be betting)
PLACE: A bet on a horse to finish either 1st or 2nd.
SHOW: A bet on a horse to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Those are the standard bets that everybody is familiar with. They are simple, straight forward, it's easy to calculate the cost, and they are easy to make. Where things start to become more complicated is with what are known as the exotic bets. Below are the exotic wagers offered by Churchill Downs this weekend.

EXACTA: A bet picking the 1st and 2nd place finishers in a race.
TRIFECTA: A bet picking the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in a race.
SUPERFECTA: A bet picking the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers in a race.
DAILY DOUBLE: A bet picking the winners of two races, usually two consecutive races.
PICK 3: A bet picking the winners of three consecutive races.
PICK 4: A bet picking the winners of four consecutive races.
PICK 5: A bet picking the winners of five consecutive races.
PICK 6: A bet picking the winners of six consecutive races.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Get Your Drink On, Horse-Racing Style [VIDEO]

When Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark of Lewis and Clark expedition fame, traveled to England back in 1872 he made a stop to visit the Epsom Derby, a famous horse race at the time. This peaked his interest in the sport, later getting to know the French Jockey Club in Paris during his trip, the people who organize the Grand Prix de Paris, the greatest race in France at the time.

Clark had a simialr idea for his states-side home in Kentucky, where he established Louisville Jockey Club upon his return and began raising money to build a horse track. That illustrious track would soon be known as Churchill Downs, named after Clark's relatives John and Henry Churchill who provided the land. The track was officially incorporated in 1937 as Churchill Downs.

Now that you know all that, I think it's time for a drink. Don't you?

SB Nation's very own Matt Uffordhas been on the hunt for the perfect old-timey recipies for some classic southern cocktails like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Whiskey Smash. check out the video below to see how they are done right.

MINT JULEP:

1. Muddle 3-5 sprigs of mint with simple syrup or sugar (to taste)

2. Add 3 oz. bourbon and crushed ice in layers

3. Garnish with mint

WHISKEY SMASH:

1. Muddle 2-4 pieces lemon, 3-5 sprigs of mint, and simple syrup or sugar to taste

2. Add 2-3 oz. bourbon, stir, and strain (optional)

3. Garnish with mint and/or lemon

OLD FASHIONED:

1. Mix 1/2 oz. simple syrup with 2 dashes bitters OR Muddle 1 sugar cube in a splash of water and 2 dashes bitters

Kentucky Derby 2012 Picks: Optimizer Deserves A Look Among Heavy Underdogs

There are a few horses that probably have little to no shot at winning this one. Done Talking, Rousing Sermon, Optimizer, Trinniberg, and Liason are all horses facing long odds at 50-1 at actually winning these.

If you're really interested in taking a look at horses with long odds, Optimizer is probably your best bet. Optimizer did finish second in the G2-Rebel Stakes, so he has that going for him.

If you're really into betting long shots, Trinniberg deserves a look at the spot. Because of his speed, he'll be likely to be the horse to set the pace, and if there are accidents behind them, then yeah, Trinniberg has a shot. Trinniberg will likely fade to the finish though, so he's probably
