Big Sur Marathon Results 2012: Adam Roach Men's Winner, Nuta Olaru Women's

The 26th annual Big Sur International Marathon took place on Sunday. The 2012 edition was a 26-mile race stretching all the way along Highway One from Big Sur to Carmel. "Runner's World" magazine had named the Big Sur Marathon as the third best marathon in America for multiple years running, trailing only the Boston and New York marathons.

And it was an exciting finish on the men's side. Adam Roach had been trailing for most of the race, but then passed Chris Mocko with a great finishing stretch. Roach finished with an overall time of 2:50:08.

Nuta Olaru had a solid finish at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where she finished 13th overall. She topped herself at the Big Sur Marathon, finishing with a 2:50:08 time.

Big Sur Marathon 2012 Results: Adam Roach, Nuta Olaru Finish Atop The Heap

The 2012 Big Sure International Marathon is in the books, marking the 26th straight year the 26-mile marathon from Big Sur to Carmel took place in the Bay Area. More than 4,500 runners from across the country made their way to the Central Coast this weekend, but only would could claim the title.

This year it was 27-year-old Adam Roach, a native of Pacific Grove, CA winning the race Sunday morning with an impressive finishing time of 2:22:30.

41-year-old Nuta Olaru, a former Olympian in the 2004 Athens games, finished as the top female runner with a time of 2:50:08.

Roach was trailing for much of the race unti he used a burst of energy down the stretch to beat San Francisco's Chris Mocko, the second place finisher and Jesus Campos of King City who finished third.

Set along the scenic Highway 1, "Runner's World" magazine has named the Big Sur Marathon as the third best marathon in America for multiple years running, trailing only the Boston and New York marathons.

Big Sur Marathon 2012: Weather Forecast, Road Closures And More

The 2012 Big Sur International Marathon takes place on Sunday. The annual 26-mile run will stretch from Big Sur to Carmel along Highway One, with plenty of other festivities taking place over the course of the day.

It should be typical Central Coast weather on Sunday morning. The various races will have start times between 6:30 a.m. PT and 9:00 a.m. PT, with the actual marathon itself beginning at 6:45 a.m. PT. Temperatures will be in the low 50s at that time and partly cloudy, with a 20% chance of precipitation. Things will warm up throughout the day, with temperatures in the high 60s by noon as the races wind down.

Highway One will be closed to vehicle traffic from approximately 6:30 a.m. PT until approximately 1:00 p.m. PT.

Big Sur Marathon 2012: Route Information, Course Map And More

The 26th annual Big Sur International Marathon will take place on Sunday. The 2012 edition, as in all previous years, will feature a 26-mile race that stretches along Highway One from Big Sur to Carmel. The official Big Sur International Marathon website has provided a helpful map of the marathon course.

The race runs south-to-north from a maintenance area 1K south of Pfeiffer State Park, along Highway One, to Rio Road in Carmel.

There will be a strict 6-hour time limit on the race, since traffic will be reopened on Highway One following the 6-hour time period set aside by the state for the marathon. From the website:

Because of safety concerns, if a participant has not reached Mile 22 by the 5 hour mark (5 ½ hour mark for the 21-Miler), he/she will not be allowed to proceed past that point.

Big Sur Marathon 2012: Weather Forecast

The annual Big Sur Marathon starts tomorrow morning at 6:45 a.m. PT. The course time limit is six hours. Here is the hour-by-hour forecast for Sunday's race for the Central Coast. The marathon stretches along Highway One from Big Sur to Carmel.

All forecasted weather listed here is coming from the Weather Channel's website.

- Things should be cloudy between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. PT, with temperatures between 49 and 50 degrees and a 20% chance of precipitation.

- The weather will begin to warm up but should still be only about 56 degrees by 9:00 a.m. PT, by which time all races will have begun.

- By the time the marathon proper wraps up (around 1:00 p.m. PT), the weather should be ideal -- right around 70 degrees.

All in all, it will be a chilly morning along the Central Coast, but nothing that local residents won't be familiar with.

Big Sur Marathon 2012: Events, Time And Schedule For The Weekend

The 2012 Big Sur International Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 29. The annual race is in its 26th year and the 26-mile run, as always, will stretch along beautiful Highway One from Big Sur to Carmel.

The main marathon and the Marathon Relay will begin at 6:45 a.m. PT on Sunday, with a course time limit of six hours or less. There is also a 21-mile run, which also begins at 6:45 a.m. PT, but the starting line is five miles north of the full marathon's starting line. The finishing time for the 21-Miler is six hours and 15 minutes or less.

There is also a 10.6 Miler beginning at Rocky Point Restaurant at 7:30 a.m. PT and a 9-Miler walk and run which begins at Rio Road. The start time for the 9-Miler Run is 9:45 a.m. PT and the start time for the 9-Miler Walk is 9:50 a.m. PT.

There is a 5K run and walk that start and end at Marathon Village. Starting time is 7:45 a.m. PT for the 5K run and
7:50 a.m. PT for the 5K walk. If that's not enough for you, there's also a Just Kids 3K at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove, which begins at 8:00 a.m. PT.

It is still possible to register for the 9-Miler and the 5K and 3K events, but the other events are sold out. You can find registration information if you head over to the official website.
