Bay Area drivers Jeff Gordon and AJ Allmendinger were able to make some strides at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, although both drivers were victims of some tough luck.
Jeff Gordon led for a whopping 322 out of 500 laps but was done in by an untimely caution flag on Lap 497. He was in the lead prior to a green-white-checkered-flag restart. Clint Bowyer caused Gordon and Jimmie Johnson to spin out on the restart, resulting in another caution. Unable to pit during the overtime laps while waiting for a restart, Gordon ran out of gas on the track, bringing a tough end to his strong day of racing.
Ryan Newman was able to move into prime position after the spin out and passed AJ Allmendinger on the white flag lap of the second restart. Allmendinger still finished in second place and both he and Gordon were able to leap several spots in the Sprint Cup standings. Gordon is now 18th and Allmendinger is 21st.
