Bumgarner's contract goes through the first year of free agency.

The San Francisco Giants have signed Madison Bumgarner to a five-year, $35 million extension through 2017 with options covering the 2018 and 2019 seasons, according to multiple reports including the San Jose Mercury News' Alex Pavlovic and SFX Baseball. Also according to SFX, if Bumgarner qualifies for arbitration as a Super 2 after 2012, his guarantee increases to $40 million.

Bumgarner has become a more important part of the Giants' rotation as his career has quickly progressed. After joining the Giants in 2009, he started 18 games in 2010 and 33 in 2011 and currently holds a 21-20 record for his career with a 3.12 ERA. Bumgarner is 1-1 in two starts so far this season with an ERA of 3.97.

Bumgarner joins Matt Cain as young starting pitchers the Giants have locked up long-term, solidifying their pitching rotation for the future. Giants GM Brian Sabean is quoted by CSN Bay Area stating this.

"Preserving our core pitching for the long term remains a top priority for the Giants and today's extension certainly helps further that goal," said Giants GM Brian Sabean. "Madison has already proven that he is one of the best left handed pitchers in the game today and we are confident that he will continue to succeed for many years to come."
