2012 Big West Tournament: Cal Poly Advances To Semifinals

Several local teams will be in action as the 2012 Big West Tournament gets underway on Thursday.

Big West Tournament 2012: Schedule, Bracket, TV Coverage For Day Three

The Cal Poly-SLO Mustangs were hoping to have a shot at making it to the NCAA Tournament as they headed into Friday night's semifinal match in the 2012 Big West Tournament. The Mustangs entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed but ended up falling short of the Championship Game with a 64-52 loss to the No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.

The Mustangs took the lead early in the first half, but trailed by one point heading into halftime. The Gauchos refocused their efforts and extended the lead steadily after the break and the Mustangs were sent packing.

The Mustangs defeated their first round opponents, No. 5 seed UC Riverside Highlanders, on Thursday before getting knocked off by UCSB. The Gauchos had defeated No. 6 Pacific Tigers to get to the semis.

On the other side of the bracket, the No. 1 seed Long Beach St. 49ers beat the No. 8 UC Davis Aggies in a blowout on Thursday before dispatching the No. 3 UC Irvine Anteaters in Friday's semifinals.

The 49ers and Gauchos will meet in the Big West Championship Game for the third straight year. UCSB won in both 2010 and 2011.

The finals of the Big West tournament will take place on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Big West Tournament 2012: Schedule, Bracket, TV Coverage For Day Two

The semifinals matchups are now set for the 2012 Big West Tournament. No. 4 seed Cal Poly will take on No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara in the nightcap of the doubleheader while the intriguing David and Goliath matchup between top seed Long Beach State and No. 7 seed UC Irvine will be showcased in the first game. The conference will receive some nice exposure with both games being televised nationally on ESPNU.

Matchup: No. 1 Long Beach State vs No. 7 UC Irvine
Time: 6:30 p.m. PT
Location: Honda Center Anaheim, California
T.V.: ESPNU

Game 2

Matchup: No. 3 UC Santa Barbara vs No. 4 Cal Poly

2012 Big West Tournament Bracket, First Round Recap: UC Davis, Pacific Ousted While Cal Poly Moves On

The quarterfinal round of the 2012 Big West Tournament quarterfinals featured both the expected and the unexpected, with two area teams being sent home, while one holds on to the dream of an NCAA berth for at least another day.

Cal Poly used a second half surge to beat UC Riverside, 66-54. After shooting 34.6 percent in the first half, the Mustangs shot 50 percent in the second half which went a long way to the victory. Mustang guard Amaurys Fermin scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to propel the comeback.

No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara downed No. 6 seeded Pacific 72-52. After shooting 53-percent from the field in the first half, the Gauchos never looked back. Senior guard Orlando Johnson had a game-high 15 points.

No. 1 seed Long Beach State took care of business against No. 8 seed UC Davis, 80-46. Eugene Phelps led the 49ers with 18 points, as this was the third time they had beaten the Aggies by at least 20 points this season.

In the most surprising result of the day, UC Irvine stunned Cal State Fullerton, 65-59. The Anteaters were led by guard Chris McNeely who exploded for 24 points. After holding an eight point halftime lead, UCI held off numerous second half runs by CSF runs to advance to the semifinals.

Long Beach State Vs. UC Davis Score: 49ers In Control At The Half

The Long Beach State 49ers tested themselves early in the season against some of the nations best high major programs and that experience prepared them for an impressive run through the Big West. After winning the league outright with a 15-1 record, Long Beach State headed into the Big West tournament looking to secure the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Through one half of play the 49ers are holding serve and have taking a commanding 20 point lead into the intermission. Long Beach jumped out early and never really let off the gas giving themselves a comfortable cushion as they look to head to the Big West semifinals on Friday.

Long Beach State controlled the the half from a defensive perspective holding UC Davis to just 36% shooting from the field. Offensively the 49ers were paced by senior forward Eugene Phelps who scored 15 points before the intermission.

Senior guard Casper Ware added nine and Long Beach State heads into the half up 41-21.

Big West Tournament 2012: UC Santa Barbara Advances To Semifinals With 20-Point Win Vs. Pacific

The No. 3 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the Pacific Tigers for the third time this season, this time 72-52 in the first round of the Big West basketball tournament to advance to the semis on Friday.

Behind 53-percent shooting in the first half, UCSB took a 14-point lead into halftime, 43-29, and were able to increase that lead to 20 in the second despite a poorer half of basketball.

Senior guard Orlando Johnson was the game's leading scorer with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting. His fellow senior guard James Nunnally contributed 11 points in 30 minutes. Pacific was led by Lorenzo McCloud's 14 points.

After all the games are completed today, the advancing teams will be re-seeded and play tomorrow in the tournament's semis. The championship game will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
