Super Bowl Winners: How The New York Giants Franchise Stacks Up Against The 49ers

The New York Giants picked up their fourth all-time Super Bowl title on Sunday when they defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants are now one of five teams with four or more Super Bowl wins in franchise history.

The Giants were previously locked in a tie with the Patriots, the Raiders and the Washington Redskins with three Super Bowl titles each. The fourth Super Bowl title now brings them in line with the Green Bay Packers with four titles. The franchises still ahead of them in the all-time list are the Pittsburgh Steelers (still in first place with six titles), the Dallas Cowboys and of course, the San Francisco 49ers.

Niners fans will not need to worry just yet about head-to-head comparisons between the two franchises. Even if the Giants manage to make it to another Super Bowl title before the 49ers have another shot, the Niners will still have their perfect 5-0 record in the big game to lord over the Giants and their fans. In addition, the four titles for the Giants were spread out over 25 years, from 1987 until 2012. The Niners picked up their five titles in just 13 seasons, from 1982 until 1995.

In fact, the 49ers are the only franchise with multiple titles to never have lost on the grandest stage. That remains a staggering achievement and puts San Francisco in a class by itself.

Best Super Bowl 2012 Commercials: Chevrolet Ticks Off Ford, Vampires Get Inadvertently Slaughtered

The New York Giants have emerged victorious over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Casual fans tuned into the game in droves and it's a virtual certainty that the talk in offices tomorrow will focus more on the commercials than on the game itself. As always, there were a plethora of "event" ads to tickle the fancy of just about every type of viewer.

This year certainly provided a bumper crop of ads, ranging from simple cheesecake to slightly-less-simple beefcake. So basically your normal night of television viewing. Let's take a look at some of the standouts from the 2012 Super Bowl.

Three of the standout commercials in my mind were all car ads. Chevy's post-apocalyptic Silverado ad was good for a couple of cheap gags and sometimes that's all you need. Some people might get rankled by the petty jab at Ford, but I'm all for it. More jabs at competing companies, all the time, I say!

Hyundai's "Gonna Fly Now" ad. You know what sports fans love? Rocky. You know what non-sports fans love? Rocky IV. This commercial splits the difference and presents the iconic movie theme in a cute little package. Can't-miss proposition.

Audi's "Vampire Party" was horrifying in its casual mass slaying of the seemingly-benign undead. My only real gripe with this commercial was that not a single vampire in this entire ad said, "BLEAH!" Not even once! How simple would it have been? Geez, Audi.

You can find tons more commercials and commentary at SB Nation's Super Bowl commercials StoryStream.

Super Bowl 2012 MVP: Eli Manning Does It Again To Tom Brady

Tom Brady generally got the best of Peyton Manning in their crucial head-to-head matchup. Little brother has done his best to take revenge on the biggest stage.

Eli Manning got the best of Brady once more in a Super Bowl. Despite Brady completing nearly 66% of his passes and putting two touchdowns in the end zone, Manning completed an incredible 75% of his passes and had one touchdown for 296 yards. And again, for another Super Bowl, Manning led a late fourth-quarter drive to put the Giants on top.

What a season for Eli.

Super Bowl 2012 Final Score: New York Giants Beat New England Patriots 21-17

Eli Manning and the New York Giants did it to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots again.

Manning directed another last minute fourth quarter drive with a big throw and catch (this one down to Mario Manningham down the sidelines), resulting in a last minute touchdown (this one by Ahmad Bradshaw) that gave New York the victory in this one.

Brady got another chance to try and win this one, but his Hail Mary as time expired was batted down in the end zone.

Super Bowl 2012 Score: Giants Take Early Lead, Patriots Recover To Go Up 17-12

The New England Patriots got off to a bad start against the New York Giants when Tom Brady gave up a safety in the end zone and the Giants then scored a touchdown on the next drive.

But since then, Brady has gotten on a roll. He's completed a bunch of passes in a row and scored 17 unanswered to give New England an early 17-9 lead in the third quarter. The Giants drove back down the field to put three points back on the board.

Super Bowl 2012 Pregame Notes: Kelly Clarkson Anthem Time, NFC Coin Toss Streak Broken

The Super Bowl pregame was everything you could expect. Very standard, very patriotic, very American. The Super Bowl is in America, last I checked.

Two country stars sang America The Beautiful. Made you feel all wistful inside. If you're from the Bay Area you probably started texting.

Kelly Clarkson sang the National Anthem, which took 134 seconds. That was right on the nose of the Super Bowl prop bet, so who knows who ended up winning this one or whether Vegas will end up just giving people their money back.

The Patriots won the coin toss, ending one of the strangest streaks in history--a 15 year stretch of the NFC winning the coin toss. The Patriots deferred until the second half though.

Super Bowl Recipes: Hey, Everyone Loves Nachos

Hey America, it’s Super Bowl Sunday!

Time to masticate for 6 hours straight, and when doing so for so long, you want to be chewing on things that taste good. One thing that is surely to be a hit at your Super Bowl shindig large or small, is a big ol’ plate of cheesy, delicious, nachos.

Here is a recipe that is a guaranteed bullseye:

Ingredients:

1 pound ground turkey
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
2 tablespoons hot sauce (optional)
1 (1 ounce) package dry taco seasoning mix
1 (14 ounce) can refried beans
1 (14.5 ounce) package tortilla chips
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 (4 ounce) can sliced black olives
1 ripe tomato, diced
1 bunch green onions, sliced
freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large skillet over medium heat, begin to brown the ground turkey. Stir in garlic, pepper, 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and 1 tablespoon chives. Stir in 1 tablespoon hot sauce. When the turkey is browned, stir in taco seasoning mix according to package instructions.

Pour the beans into a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave until softened. Stir in 1 tablespoon chives and 1 tablespoon hot sauce.

Spread the tortilla chips across the bottom of a baking sheet. Spoon the beans mixture over the chips. Then spread the turkey mixture across the top. Sprinkle cheese, then olives, tomatoes, green onions, and remaining 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes over the top.

Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted, usually about 15 minutes.

2012 Super Bowl Prop Bets: Will Bay Area Native Tom Brady Have A Big Day?

The Super Bowl features a pair of East Coast teams, but the star quarterback of the game, Tom Brady, is a native of the Bay Area's own San Mateo. Brady grew up a huge 49ers fan and was quite disappointed when he was passed over by his beloved team. He now sits on Super Bowl victory away from equaling 49ers legend Joe Montana, along with Terry Bradshaw, with his fourth ring.

As would be expected, Brady is currently the odds-on favorite at Bovada to earn MVP honors for Super Bowl XLVI. The Patriots are a 2 1/2 point favorite, and quarterbacks frequently get the MVP award, so the odds make sense. Eli Manning is right behind him at 9/4.

Brady has numerous prop bets in his name over at Bovada. Given the field turf and questionable secondaries that will be involved in the game, the over on some Brady props might not be the worst idea in the world. Bovada set numerous over/unders for Brady including 320 1/2 passing yards, 39 1/2 passing attempts, 25 1/2 completions, 42 1/2 yards for his longest completion, 2 1/2 total touchdown passes and 1/2 for total interceptions.

You can also wager on things like whether he will throw a touchdown or interception first, whether he will throw a first quarter touchdown pass or a fourth quarter touchdown pass, and of course rushing attempts and yards. The most bizarre Brady prop is whether or not Tom Brady's son will be wearing a Brady jersey if he is shown on television during the game. That's not creepy at all.

2012 Super Bowl Prop Bets: Victor Cruz Is A Good Bet

As Super Bowl XLVI approaches, the odds of a high scoring Super Bowl are fairly significant. Although the over/under has come down from 55 to 54 in some places, these are two prolific passing offenses getting a chance to show their stuff on field turf, likely in the enclosed environment of Lucas Oil Field's retractable roof.

Given the speedy turf being used and the questionable secondaries involved, the skill position players could put together some impressive totals on Sunday. Victor Cruz is one guy who could further raise a profile that has skyrocketed this season. Cruz has set numerous Giants franchise records and could be the go-to guy for Eli Manning on Sunday.

The folks at Bovada set the over/under on Victor Cruz's longest reception at 29 1/2 yards. He passed that number in eight of his regular season games and came up a couple yards short in two more. He has broken numerous big plays this season, including a 99-yard reception against the New York Jets in Week 16. The smart move is on the over.

The over/under on total yards for Victor Cruz is 89 1/2 yards. He surpassed that total in ten regular season contests and one postseason contest. He is in line for a huge day against a Patriots secondary that has struggled all season and I would hit overs on yards all day long.

One final Cruz over of intrigue would be whether he will score a touchdown. He is even money to score and I think he could be in line for his signature salsa on Super Bowl Sunday.

Super Bowl 2012 Kickoff Time, TV Schedule, Live Online Stream And More

It's finally here. Even if you don't have a rooting interest in the game (and certainly no one would be able to blame you), we're pretty sure that almost all of you will be watching. How could you not? It's the Super Bowl! Will Rob Gronkowski play? Will Bill Belichick get his revenge and then retire? Will Eli Manning get a second ring and finally be worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as his brother? We're just hours away from knowing all these answers.

We have all of your viewing information right here in one handy place.

TV Coverage: The game will be televised nationally on NBC. Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth will have the call from the booth.

Online Streaming: NBC will be streaming the game live, for free, at NBCSports.com

2012 Super Bowl Line And Odds: Patriots Sit As 2 1/2 Point Favorites

The New England Patriots head into Super Bowl XLVI as modest 2 1/2 point favorites over the New York Giants in a rematch of the Giants 24-20 win during the regular season and the Giants 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII. The line opened at Patriots -3 1/2 but a lot of money has been pouring in on the Giants. Sunday will see Las Vegas casinos rooting for the Patriots to cover.

The folks at Odds Shark have put together a rundown of how each team performed in 2011 when looking at various gambling statistics. Against the spread, the Giants were 8-7-1, while the Patriots were 9-6-1. The Giants went over the over/under total nine times, while the Patriots went over 11 times. This seems like an ideal game for high scoring and the 55 point over/under seems like a decent number.

You can also bet on a variety of team props in the game ranging from who will win the coin toss to who will score first (Giants have slight edge). I think this game will end up as a fairly high scoring affair and will look at points and yardage overs for the most part.

2012 Super Bowl Line And Odds: Patriots Remain Favorites, Giants Getting The Action

The New England Patriots and New York Giants square off Sunday evening in Super Bowl XLVI and plenty of money is pouring in as people wager on the two teams. This is the biggest event of the year for gamblers and upwards of $100 million will be wagered at casinos in Las Vegas. Much more than that is wagered online and through illegal means, but that amount is virtually impossible to figure out.

The Patriots currently sit as 2 1/2 point favorites after opening as 3 1/2 point favorites. MGM Resorts was prepared to open the Patriots at -4 1/2, but their near stumble against the Ravens and the Giants hot streak heading into the game pushed them to the opening 3 1/2. The line has been at 2 1/2 for much of the last ten days, but a search across the Internet seems to have most of the money coming in on the Giants. It is safe to say the casinos are Patriots fans right about now.

Super Bowl Rosters 2012: Tom Brady, David Baas Lead Pertinent Bay Area Patriots, Giants In XLVI

Super Bowl XLVI will kick off in a little over 24 hours and both rosters feature players who have some particularly pertinent connections to the Bay Area. It'd be much better if a Bay Area team was actually in the Super Bowl, but I suppose we'll just have to live with this for now.

The most well known Bay Area connection is of course the pride of San Mateo, Tom Brady. Much has been made throughout Brady's career about his love for the 49ers growing up and how Joe Montana was his idol as a child. Now that Brady has another shot at ring number four, the comparisons between the Patriots quarterback and Montana are heating up. A win over the Giants will put Brady in the rarified air of Montana and Terry Bradshaw. While there is an argument for passing stats being inflated these days, Brady has at least put himself a little further in the discussion.

Giants center David Baas was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers and left the team as a free agent heading into this season. Baas bounced around between guard and center during his time with the 49ers before settling in as the center last year. Baas and the 49ers could not work out a long-term deal in free agency and the 49ers replaced him with former Saints center Jonathan Goodwin.

One of the interesting stories is that of former Oakland Raiders cornerback and Antioch native Sterling Moore. The Patriots cornerback had a huge play in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship game that broke up a potential game-winning touchdown pass to Lee Evans. Moore went into training camp with the Raiders, but was cut before he could prove himself.

Here are all the pertinent greater Bay Area Super Bowl roster connections:

New England Patriots
Tom Brady - San Mateo, CA
RB Shane Vereen - Cal
DE Andre Carter - Cal - injured reserve
WR Julian Edelman - Redwood City, CA
OG Logan Mankins - Catheys Valley, CA (East of Central Valley)
OG Nick McDonald - Salinas, CA
CB Sterling Moore - Antioch, CA - formerly with Raiders

New York Giants
David Baas - former 49er
David Carr - former 49er
DE Dave Tollefson - Walnut Creek, CA
