Not only did the Stanford Caridnal baseball team make the jump to No. 1 in the country, they also got some recognition from the Pac-12 as well as junior RHP Mark Appel was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for his performance on the mound for the Card.
Appel struck out a career-best 10 in the team’s win over the No. 7-Texas Longhorns Friday night. Appel dazzled with four no-hit innings along with a shutout into the eighth, finishing the game with one run on three hits. He even retired 10 Longhorns in a row until they got their first hit off of him in the fifth.
Appel is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts, and is scheduled to start the team’s series against Fresno State on Friday.
Appel was a first team preseason All-American, and is currently seen by Baseball America as the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming MLB draft this June.
