Pebble Beach 2012: Charlie Wi Finishes Second Behind Phil Mickelson

Stay connected for news and updates

Charlie Wi had an incredible round of golf. Unfortunately it was on Thursday, not on Sunday.

Wi started the tournament with an amazing 61 which put him at the top of the leaderboard for much of the week. He moved up the next two days to stay on top of everyone else and looked like he had a decent shot at pulling out the victory on Sunday.

But then Wi got off on the wrong foot on his final round when he double-bogeyed the first hole. Two more bogeys on five and six totally evaporated his lead, and Phil Mickelson took advantage and took over. Although Wi recovered with five birdies and only one bogey down the stretch, it wasn't enough to overcome Mickelson's incredible performance, as he couldn't overcome his earlier errors.

The Cal grad came very close to notching his first career victory on the PGA Tour, but he'll have to wait for another opportunity.
