Stanford vs. Notre Dame final: Cardinals lose 20-13 in OT

First, what you're probably looking for -- the GIF of Stepfan Taylor coming very, very, very close to scoring the tying touchdown in overtime. He was ruled down both before and after review:

Ballnd_medium

Okay. Now the recap. For the first time all year, Notre Dame trailed. And for the first time in four years, Notre Dame has beaten Stanford. The No. 7 Irish survived a brutal game in breezy rain, topping their US News & World Report rivals in overtime, 20-13, on a controversial final call.

Stanford took a 13-10 lead with six minutes left in the fourth on a field goal after a 16-play, 68-yard bruiser of a drive. The way Stanford's defense had contained the Irish attack to that point (under 250 yards on the day), that might've done it.

But young Everett Golson piloted the Irish near midfield, then a late hit flag on a scramble sent the ball into Cardinal territory. Tommy Rees, who'd already pulled off two late-game miracles so far this year, came on. The ice cold junior, an on-again, off-again starter over the past calendar year, found a completion and another flag before Cierre Wood powered inside the five. A couple of safe play calls, and to overtime we went.

Rees found T.J. Jones for a seven-yard score in OT, and a huge goal line stand in the rain against one of college football's best power offenses sealed the win, twice stuffing big Stepfan Taylor at the line. He appeared to come extremely close to crossing the line after a third effort, but the call stood.

Box Score Hero: We'd go with the Stanford front seven for its pass rush, which posted three sacks, 14 hurries, and a strip-sack touchdown of Golson by Chase Thomas. But Stanford lost. As it is, we'll go with Manti Te'o's 11 tackles and ...

He didn't play for very long, but he did the one thing he's very good at. He went four-for-four for 44 yards and the game-winning touchdown. What more do you want?

Rankings Ramifications: With West Virginia and possibly South Carolina losing, No. 7 Notre Dame could arrive in the Top 5. No. 17 Stanford now has two losses, but they're both competitive road losses -- sticking around the bottom of the Top 25 wouldn't be out of the question.

But Did They Cover? Notre Dame was favored by a full touchdown.

Next Week's Schedule: Stanford gears up for the Game against Cal, which takes on Washington State later Saturday night. The Irish welcome fellow independent BYU, currently locked in a battle with No. 10 Oregon State.

Stanford vs. Notre Dame update: Fighting Irish lead 3-0 after turnover plagued first quarter

The first quarter of the game between the Stanford Cardinal and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish has been marred by turnovers, but the Fighting Irish have pulled out a 3-0 lead.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson fumbled the ball away at around midfield, but Stanford was not able to capitalize. They drove the ball to the Notre Dame 20-yard line, but quarterback Josh Nunes underthrew the ball on an attempt in the end zone and Notre Dame's Bennett Jackson intercepted the ball.

Following the interception, the Fighting Irish couldn't gain 10-yards and promptly prompted the football. Stanford responded with a drive marred by a holding penalty and a false start penalty and then punted the ball away as well.

Nunes through another interception with a couple minutes left in the first quarter. He threw into double coverage and safety Mathias Farley returned the interception almost 35 yards into the Notre Dame red zone. The Cardinal's defense held off the Fighting Irish though and Notre Dame had to settle for a 29-yard field goal.

Nunes is currently 1-for-5 for 14 yards and two interceptions. He is being slightly outplayed by Golson, who is only 3-for-8 for 20 yards. With the rain falling in South Bend, Indiana, this is looking like it might be a game decided by the defenses. The two teams have combined for less than 100 yards on offense and only three first downs.

Lee Corso picks Notre Dame over Stanford, dances on College GameDay

Perhaps the best weekly tradition of the college football season is Lee Corso making his pick for the game of the week. Corso has made it a habit of breaking out live animals onto the College GameDay set in recent weeks, but that changed on Saturday morning when he made his choice for Stanford versus Notre Dame:

Corsojig_medium

That's some pretty solid footwork from the old guy, and it's impressive he was able to change clothes in such a hurry. This marks the first time Corso has ever picked Notre Dame as the featured game of the week on GameDay.

As for the other picks, Kirk Herbstreit also likes the Irish to come out victorious on Saturday. Vince Vaughn, who was the celebrity picker, is from the South Bend area and also chose Notre Dame to win.

Kickoff this afternoon is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game can be found on NBC.
