Raiders And 49ers Preseason Series Set To Conclude After Shootings

As a result of the weekend's shootings at Candlestick Park, it appears the Raiders and 49ers preseason series will come to an end after this season.

Tim Kawkami has the story from an NFL executive:

In a response to the violence at Saturday's exhibition game at Candlestick Park, a high-ranking NFL source said it is certain that the 49ers and Raiders will end their annual exhibition game against each other.

The source said that both the NFL and local police strongly support such an end to the preseason cross-bay rivalry.

This is probably for the best. Another incident similar to the one that happened this past weekend would be a disaster. The article continues...

Though the two teams haven't told each other that they don't want to play the game any more, the NFL source said that there is no way the game will be played next year, the year after and maybe longer than that.

The exhibition game might be partially replaced by a closed Raiders-49ers scrimmage during training camp, the NFL source said.

Again, probably for the best. Hopefully the arch-rivals are able to continue their preseason matches down the road. As for the near future, though, a scrimmage at training camp is likely the most the fans will see between the two teams.
