Earthquakes vs. Timbers, MLS Schedule Preview: Timbers Host Quakes in U.S. Cup Qualifier

The San Jose Earthquakes are in Portland, Oregon to try and end a three-game losing streak as they face the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field on Tuesday. This matchup is a play-in game for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and doesn’t count towards regular season MLS standings or point totals .

The Earthquakes have won the previous two matches with the Timbers in U.S. Open Cup play, both of them coming in the fourth round of the tourney. The Quakes beat the Timbers in their first-ever meeting in July of 2004 with a 3-0 victory at PGE Park. Their second match-up between the two teams in August of 2005 was also a San Jose victory, coming out on top with a 2-0 win.

The Quakes offense will need to shake itself awake for this match after falling to a 10 man Philadelphia Union squad last week 1-0. Team goals leader Chris Wondolowski will hopefully break out of his two game scoring funk and place one on the back of the net for San Jose.

Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. PT this evening and will be broadcast live online at SJEarthquakes.com (video stream) and at www.955thegame.com (radio).
