California Linebackers Set For Season Opner

According to Cal linebacking coach Kenwick Thompson, both Keith Browner and Mychal Kendricks will rotate pass rush responsibilities. Jim McGill of Bear Insider with the story.

One of the mysteries heading into the season is whether Browner or other starting linebacker Mychal Kendricks will line up on the weak side as the primary rush backer.

The reason for the confusion is that there apparently isn’t a traditional weak side or strong side linebacker this year, as both starters will be responsible for playing both sides, depending on the formation and movement.

“They both have to play both sides since teams play tight ends on both sides and sometimes play two tight ends,” said Thompson. “They’ll do both.”

Preseason All-American candidate Mike Mohamed will play weakside inside backer and junior DJ Holt will play strong side inside backer this season.

UC Davis Fans Confident About Their Chances Against California

The California Golden Blogs conducted an interview with the only mainstream publication that covers UC Davis football on a regular basis, the California Aggie. And like true college football fans should, they believe their team will make a game of it against the on Saturday.

9. What do you think the final score will be?

Jason: Answering this question puts me in a pickle. I can channel my inner Aggie and say UC Davis will run the gauntlet and come our with a victory or I can channel my inner sports fan and make an educated prediction of the game. I will say this. The Aggies will surprise quite a few people. I've had my friends who go to Berkeley drop all kinds of insults about Davis. The best one I've heard is "Nah man...You don't rub in it when you beat UC Davis. That's like kicking a baby." I'm not going to go and talk trash about Berkeley because more than likely, the Bears will win this one. Cal is faster, stronger and bigger. But I will say this. The Aggie will make a game of it. They'll compete and execute all the way to the final whistle. UC Davis will open some eyes and make some of those obnoxious Berkeley fans squirm in there seats. Maybe in a few years, the two teams can meet up again and Davis can run the table and steal a victory. However, I don't see the Aggies getting lucky on Saturday.

Final: Cal 24-Davis 10

Grace: We’re a team on the rise and hungry for victory: 14-12, UC Davis (like it was in 1939). Check out my preview of Saturday’s game in the Aggie to find out the real story from the last time our teams played over 70 years ago.

Giorgio Tavecchio Wins Cal Starting Kicking Job

After an intense battle to hold off freshman Jed Barnett, the Milanese-born kicker nailed down the spot to be kicking off the Golden Bears football season.

Cal coach Jeff Tedford said today that Giorgio Tavecchio has won both the field goal and kickoff job. He had previously said Tavecchio would handle field goals, but was taking a longer look at freshman Jed Barnett on kickoffs. But it turns out that Tavecchio clearly beat the competition in both areas. “We looked at Vince (D’Amato), we looked at Barnett, (David) Seawright had some chances through camp,” Tedford said. “Giorgio is clearly the most consistent.”

Tavecchio is probably the biggest curiosity to Cal fans. He has made some huge field goals down the stretch (most notably to beat both Arizona and Arizona State last season), but few of them have been outside 30 yards and it was often a frustrating adventure to line the kick up right for him to deliver it down the middle. Can new special teams coordinator Jeff Genyk get more out of him?

Dave Wilkerson Cleared To Play, Brian Schwenke Starting At Left Guard

After the departure of Chris Martin and Cecil Whiteside’s greyshirt, Dave Wilkerson has become the main linebacking recruit from the prized 2010 class to see action outside for the Golden Bears. However he had to deal with the same old annoying NCAA bureaucracy.

Outside linebacker Dave Wilkerson and defensive end Gabe King have had to be held out of practice the past few days as they wait for paperwork to clear from NCAA clearinghouse.

Jeff Tedford said all of the players’ paperwork has been submitted multiple times but policies have changed and they haven’t received final clearance. The players can’t practice until the NCAA approves it.

Wilkerson has finally been cleared to play and should see action with the second unit on Saturday against Davis.

Also, sophomore Brian Schwenke has been confirmed to take over Matt Summers-Gavin’s position at left guard. Schwenke played most of 2009 as a true freshman backup, so he will have plenty of requisite experience at the position.

Cal-UC Davis News & Updates: Donovan Edwards To Start At Right Tackle

Cal football is right around the corner, with the opening kickoff this Saturday vs. UC Davis. Keep up to date with this week's news on the Golden Bears home season opener!

With Matt Summers-Gavin still limited due to injuries, Donovan Edwards has been slated to start at right tackle. California Golden Blogs discusses this news.

As has been postulated for a few weeks, the talented offensive lineman will miss the opening game, according to the ever reliable Moraga Bear at Bear Insider. Edwards has had plenty of experience at RT (especially in 2008 when he took and over and started the last quarter of the season there), and the versatile senior should be plenty ready for Saturday's game.

It was later reported by Jonathan Okanes of the Contra Costa Times that Summers-Gavin is available, but will not start.

OL Matt Summers-Gavin took reps at practice this morning, but Jeff Tedford says he will not start. He could be available as a backup

His availability might depend on how difficult a time the Aggies are giving the Golden Bears.
