C.J. Watson Targeted By The Magic

Orlando's quest for backup points for Jameer Nelson continues unimpeded. The latest target by Otis Smith is Golden State's secondary 1, according to John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com.

Upgrading the depth behind standout point guard Jameer Nelson is a major point of emphasis. Golden State restricted free agent C.J. Watson is a target of the Smith’s as is veteran Steve Blake. Smith admitted that the team was active just after midnight Thursday, the start of the free-agent courting period, expressing "interest to the guys that we really like.’’

After the jump, get Ben Q. Rock's take on Watson from Orlando Pinstriped Post, the Magic SB Nation blog.

Man, Otis Smith

has a serious Golden State Warrior fetish. Isn’t this the second straight year he’s been trying to get CJ Watson? I’m hoping he’d be willing to get his hands on any of the Warriors skinny bigs maybe for Ryan Anderson and some cash, if cash is what Cohan wants.

Yep. Magic have always been big on having a long rotation, particularly guys who can spot up and nail threes. Nelson, Alston, Jay-Will, Anthony Johnson…

Watson fits the model. At the very least, he’s confident enough to take those shots, so maybe they’re hoping he rediscovers his groove in Orlando.

I could see that.

I think if CJ Watson’s main gig is just as a spark off the bench, he could be ideal there. Any thing more than that might get kind of iffy.

I want to know what other former Warriors of the Orlando Magic think about the stockpiling of Warriors talent and the giving them of a new title of “major contributor to a playoff team” even if their roles are the same. Like “hey! I do the same thing I used to, but now people actually think I’m relevant!”
